Bill Veeck, nicknamed "Sport Shirt Bill," is a franchise owner and promoter in Major League Baseball. He hails from Chicago, Illinois but grew up in Hinsdale, Illinois. His father, William Veeck, Sr., served as the president of the Chicago Cubs during his childhood. Veeck served as the owner of the a few teams in the major leagues; the Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox. Veeck was also responsible for his contributions and many innovations to baseball.
Veeck took his college education at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. In 1933 however, Veeck left Kenyon College after his father died and he became club treasurer for the Chicago Cubs. In 1941, Veeck left the Cubs and purchased the Milwaukee Brewers, in partnership with Charlie Grimm, a former Cubs player and manager. After winning three pennants in five years Veeck sold his Milwaukee franchise in 1945. In 1946, Veeck became the owner of the Cleveland Indians in the major leagues. In 1951, Veeck bought an 80% share in the St. Louis Browns. Veeck became head of an assembly that acquired a controlling interest in the Chicago White Sox. Veeck retired after the 1980 Chicago White Sox season. In 1986, Veeck died from lung cancer. He was then inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame later in 1991.
