William Fitch, born in 1935 was an American former National Basketball Association (NBA) coach from Davenport, Iowa. He was totally successful throughout his coaching career. He started as a college ball coach at the University of Minnesota, Bowling Green State University, the University of North Dakota and Coe College. Two of his teams were able to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
Before his coaching career, Fitch was originally a U.S. Marine Corps and worked there as a drill instructor. The famous player Larry Bird acknowledged him in his book Drive: The Story of My Life as being the mentor of his strong work ethic.Fitch's professional coaching carried on for 25 years and most especially his skills were to uplift failing teams. In 2004, Fitch was one was included as one of the top five in ranking among all NBA coaches for having an all-time number of victories for the teams that he coached. He was famous for training Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parishand most of the Boston Celtics. His awards included the NBA's Coach of the Year Award for two times. Cleveland Cavaliers also experienced Fitch as their coach as well as teams like the New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. Coaching the Cavaliers in the first game was challenging enough that the team lost its first 15 games.
