His paternal grandfather immigrated to the US from Italy in the 1900s. Giamatti went to Yale University where he graduated magna cum laude.
Giamatti decided to pursue further studies in New Haven and earned his doctorate in 1964. While in Yale University, Giamatti taught Comparative Literature. He was promoted by Kingman Brewster, Jr. as master of Ezra Stiles College. He later became the president of Yale University in 1978 and occupied to position until 1986.
An avid Boston Red Sox fan, Giamatti was deeply interested in baseball. When rumors first circulated that he was to be instated as president of Yale, Giamatti often expressed his preference to be the American League’s president instead. He finally got the position in 1986 when he was made National League President.
In 1989, he was made the Commissioner of the Major League Baseball. One of the changes that he made in the MLB included the strict enforcement of the balk rule amongst umpires. Giamatti was responsible for Pete Rose’s voluntary withdrawal from the MLB after being involved in a betting scandal.
