Atanasio Rigal is a former professional baseball player who is more famously known as Tony Perez. He played in the Pacific Coast League before having his Major League Baseball career and was awarded as the Most Valuable Player in the minor league in the 1964 season. He started his Major League Baseball career with the Cincinnati Reds and has played a great role in the team’s so-called Big Red Machine. In 1967, he was named to an All-Star team and was part of what is considered as the longest game in the history of All-Star games. In that particular game, he scored a home run that led the National League to its win. He started playing in the third base but eventually had the first base job with the Reds. He was part of the team’s appearance in the World Series for four times and had a great role in the team’s success in the 1976 World Series.
After his very successful stint with the Reds, he also played for the Boston Red Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies. He bagged a number of awards for his superb performances in the field. He was included in the All-Star team for seven times and was given the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award in 1980. He was also inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
