Arturss Irbe is a retired professional ice hockey player who was born on February 2, 1967 in Riga, Lativa. He played as a goaltender for a few National Hockey League teams like the San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, Vancouver Canucks and Dallas Stars. Ibe also became part of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
He entered the National Hockey League as a 10th round pick of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1989 National Hockey League Draft where he finished as 196th overall selection. However, he spent his first professional season with the Dinamo Riga of the Soviet Hockey League. He was a significant factor for the Dinamo Riga’s journey to the Soviet Hockey League Finals. Irbe also played for the Soviet Union from 1989 to 1990 for the World Championships. He was named as the greatest goalkeeper of the 1990 season of the World Championships.
His National Hockey League career rose in 1991 with his first team, the San Jose Sharks. Nicknamed “The Wall”, he was an important player in the franchise’s history. He also became a backup goaltender for the Dallas Stars and the Vancouver Canucks. He played as a starter for the Carolina Hurricanes and was part of the NHL All-Star Team in the 1998-1999 seasons. He spent a few more seasons in the NHL and also appeared in a few European leagues before he went to retirement. He became a goaltending coach for the Dinamo Riga and is currently working for that position for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League.
