Anton Alekseyevich Volchecnkov is a professional Russian ice hockey defense man currently playing for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League. He was born on February 25, 1982 in Moscow, Russia and has been given nicknames such as the A- Train, the Human Shield, and the Russian Bear.

Volchenkov started his playing career when he was drafted by the Ottawa Senators during the first round of the 21st overall selection in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He came to the United States in the 2002- 2003 seasons and spent his stay with the Senators. In the time he spent playing in Europe, he served as a goaltender until his coach told him to play in defense. His leadership by a large margin in blocked shots in the 2006 -2007 seasons can be attributed to this. He is regarded as one of the toughest players in the league and is known for his fierce attitude towards other players. His name consistently appears in the list of the top shot blockers and hitters in NHL.

He was a “stay- at- home” defense man and a regular starter in the Senators’ lineup. He is recognized as one of Ottawa’s top two defenders; along with his usual partner and fellow stay at home defense man, Chris Phillips. After rallying the Senators to the Stanley Cup in 2007, in July 1, 2010, Volchenkov signed a contract with the New Jersey Devils.

Volchecnkov has played for the Russian national ice hockey team in the 2006 Olympic Games, again in the 2010 Winter Olympics, and in the 2009 IIHF World Championship. He also suffered a few injuries here and there which are an inevitable part of being a defense man.
