A first base coach for the Detroit Tigers before and an outfielder in the Major League Baseball, Andrew James Van Slyke is from Utica, New York. He was drafted in 1979 by the Saint Louis cardinals during his senior year at the New Hartford Central high School. He made his MLB debut on the 17th of June 1983. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates during the spring training in 1987 together with Mike LaValliere and Mike Dunne in exchange for Tony Pena.  He plays alongside Bobby Bonilla and Barry Bonds while with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was last seen in the baseball field on the 1st of October 1995 playing for the Philadelphia Phillies. He is now a writer and author of baseball related books and released in 2009 the book “Tiger Confidential: The Untold Inside Story of the 2008 Season” and published in 2010 the book “The Curse: the Cubs Win! The Cubs Win!...Or Do They?” together with Rob Rains.

 

Before his retirement, he has posted a total of .274 batting average; 164 home runs; and runs batted in of 792. Andy Van Slyke received recognitions in the All Star selection for three times, the Gold Glove Award for five times and the Silver Slugger award two times.
