Andre Ware is a former American professional football player. He was born in Galveston, Texas and took his college education and played college football at the University of Houston where he was the first black quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy in 1989. Ware played as quarterback for a few teams in both the National Football League and the Canadian Football League. Ware played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Raiders and the Berlin Thunders; and in the CFL for the Ottawa Rough Riders, British Colombia Lions and the Toronto Argonauts. Ware is 6 ft. 2 in. and 205 lbs. He started his professional career in the National Football League after he was drafted by the Detroit Lions during the 1990 NFL Draft. He was a first round pick of the team in the draft.
Ware joined the Lions for the 1990 season, teaming with another Heisman Trophy winner, Barry Sanders. Ware spent four years with Detroit, playing for fourteen games and starting six of them. Ware's best draw out came in the 1992 season when the Lions were out of the playoffs: Ware won two of three games. The loss came from the San Francisco 49ers. Ware began the 1994 season on the roster of the Los Angeles Raiders. He was however, released after several games. And in 1995 he was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, one of the NFL's two expansion teams that year. In 1999, Ware joined the Berlin Thunder, a German NFL Europe team and spent five games with the team.
