Middle infielder in Major League Baseball, Anderson Hernandez is currently playing for the New York Mets. This 5’9” switch hitter was born on October 30, 1982 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He had his major league debut in 2005.
In 2001, Hernandez was signed as a free agent when he was 18 by the Detroit Tigers. He has shown poor patience and high strikeouts when he played foir minor leagues which is typical of a teenager and he didn’t rise past single-A not until 2004. After that particular season, Hernandez was traded with the catcher Vance Wilson of the Mets who became dispensable after the team signed Ramon Castro. Hernandez showed off great power as he had a playoff contention in 2005 with the Mets hitting over .300 both in double-A and triple-A. He was then called up to the majors in September. He became the starting second baseman of the Mets in the beginning of the 2006 season when Kazuo Matsui had a knee injury.
Hernandez also comes back to his native country and play with the Dominican Republic on Tigres del Licey- one of the best teams in town. He had won the Rookie of the Year of the Regular Season and also bagged the Most Valuable Player title on the finals. He was called “los menores”, a Spanish word for “the kids”, together with Erick Aybar and they are among the best middle infields in Dominican Republic.
