About Alex Groza Memorabilia & Collectibles
Member of the “Fabulous Five”, Alex Groza is a retired professional baseball player. He also earned considerable success while playing college basketball for the University of Kentucky. He played for the Kentucky Wildcats and led the team back-to-back 1948 and 1949 NCAA Championships. He was named an All-American for three instances and an All-SEC. Groza has also been named as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player for two occasions.
He went professional after being selected by the Indianapolis Olympians during round one of the 1949 NBA Draft. During his rookie season, he was able to make an average of 22.5 ppg. Groza was named into the All-NBA First team in 1950 and in 1951. He was also named as an NBA All-Star in 1951.
Groza’s career was abruptly ended in 1951. Currently, Groza was the first player in the history of the NBA to end his career with an average of at least 20 ppg. In 1948, Groza was able to play for the U.S. Basketball Team in the 1948 Olympics held in London. The team took home the gold for that event.
After leaving the NBA, Groza held a number of coaching jobs including head coach for Bellarmine University, the Kentucky Colonels and the San Diego Conquistadores.
