Adam Parrish Wainwright was born on August 30, 1981 in Brunswick, Georgia. He is a starting pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in Major League Baseball. He batted and threw right-handed. He was drafted 29th overall by the Atlanta Braves in the amateur draft in 2000. He attended Glynn Academy and planned to play college baseball for Georgia Tech. He even wrote a letter of intent with the Yellow Jackets but he was chosen in the amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves which was his favorite team. He did not pursue college and went straight to playing professionally by signing a contract with the Braves. He was traded off to the St. Louis Cardinals in 2003 and finally made his MLB debut on September 11, 2005.
Wainwright became the 22nd player in the MLB to hit a home run off his 1st pitch in a game against the San Francisco Giants when he faced off with Noah Lowry. A capable middle reliever, he became the closer when his teammate Jason Isringhausen underwent a hip surgery. He became instrumental to the Cardinals’ championship win against Houston in the National League Central Division. In a game against the San Diego Padres, he closed out the final game and led the Cardinals to the National League Championship Series. He led the Cardinals to the World Series when he struck out against New York Mets’ Carlos Beltran. The same play by Wainwright gave the Cardinals their World Series title in 2006 against the Detroit Tigers. In 2007, he became the most reliable starter in the team when Chris Carpenter underwent an elbow surgery. He refused being a free agent in 2008 and signed another 4- year contract with the Cardinals. In 2009, he won his first Gold Glove Award and NL Most Outstanding Pitcher Players Choice Award and in 2010 pitched his first All Star Games.
