10News Offers Tips To Avoid Memorabilia Scams

Sports memorabilia can be a lucrative business, but it is also an easy way to lose a lot of money if you’re not careful.

"That little ding (on a baseball card) can be the difference between $5 and $10,000," said Stephen Rocchi of Global Authentication Inc.

Consumers need to know what they are buying.

Although sports memorabilia is hot, it is also a source of frustration.

Rocchi said, “We're experts in autographs and experts in used equipment."

He has heard the horror stories of people spending thousands of dollars on materials that turned out to be fake or overpriced.

"We always say cheap autographs aren't real. Real autographs aren't cheap," said Rocchi.

Experts like Rocchi said consumers don’t have to be victims as long as they do their homework.

"Read as much as you can about anything potentially you’re going to buy," said Mike Gutierrez of Heritage Auction Galleries.

Experts advise consumers to research the materials they are interested in buying.

They also advise people to call around and figure out how much an item should be worth.

Even at shows like the National Sports Collectors Convention, there are bad guys ready to take advantage of people.

"When you're spending dollars on trading cards, take the time to ensure there hasn't been any doctoring or altering. Make sure you're getting the right product for the money you're paying," said Mike Baker of Global Authentication Inc.

Baker makes a living telling people whether they have been ripped off.

Many people are getting their items authenticated, something heavily recommended for anyone buying any memorabilia.

"Through our examination process we can tell someone whether it's real or not real. A lot of times people bring items, find out it's not real," said Rocchi.

If consumers take the right steps, an investment in that Babe Ruth bat, Tiger Woods memento or Larry Bird jersey will be a good buy.

Some memorabilia Web sites like eBay will help authenticate items.

Experts also advise people to look for shops that have been in business for a long time and to always buy from reputable dealers.

Businesses that have been open for a long time indicate a loyal consumer base.
