Strasburg Memorabilia? No, Says Gwynn

2009 Upper Deck USA Stephen Strasburg Rookie CardThere were 3,337 people in the stands Friday night to watch San Diego State pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg's final start at home.

He left them with an indelible memory.

The pitching sensation threw a no-hitter against Air Force, striking out 17 batters and pushing his season record to 11-0. He's fanned 164 hitters in just 87 1/3 innings and sports a 1.24 earned run average.

Strasburg will almost certainly be the #1 overall pick when the Washington Nationals make their call on June 9--likely with an historic contract some say could reach $50 million. While he does have some baseball cards on the market courtesy of Upper Deck's Team USA issues, collectors are already anticipating the first true Strasburg rookie cards in a big league uniform. He's signed plenty of autographs while his legend grows at SDSU.

The school was also hoping to take advantage of his fame by selling some game-used baseballs and game-worn Strasburg caps, but the latter won't be happening. Coach Tony Gwynn vetoed the idea of Strasburg changing caps every inning, according to a story in the San Diego Union-Tribune, which was there to capture the historic farewell no-hitter.
