Homeless pets, military vets and a non-profit Hall of Fame are the recipients of generosity on the part of those who have prized sports memorabilia to offer those charities.
We'll start in Atlanta, where Braves' manager Bobby Cox has rustled up some memorabilia for the 3rd Annual Paws Because night in Atlanta. Cox has donated a game-worn uniform for a fundraising auction and also acquired some autographed items from big-time stars for the party. Baseballs, jerseys, helmets and bats signed by many Braves players and personalities, as well as autographed memorabilia from Hall of Famers as Bruce Sutter and Frank Robinson and sluggers Ken Griffey Jr and Barry Bonds will be sold.
Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Furman Bisher says Cox and a local veterinarian are serious about saving as many homeless animals as they can.
Did you know Heisman Trophy winners who attend the annual ceremony each year in New York are given a special commemorative football so they can obtain autographs from the other winners? Neither did we.
1955 Heisman winner Hopalong Cassady of Ohio State is donating one of his to a local VFW post that's trying to raise money. It seems he and his wife are regulars. The ball is adorned with 21 autographs.
