Michigan State guard Ed Bagdons 1949 Outland Trophy sells for $8,652

Content Published Originally by Detroit Free Press on Wednesday, June 15, 2011.

One week earlier, former Michigan State guard Ed Bagdon’s 1949 Outland Trophy was hanging on a wall in his son’s home.As of Tuesday night, it became the property of an undisclosed bidder who paid $8,652 for the trophy through an online auction. The selling price includes the buyer's premium levied by the Nate D. Sanders auction house.Dave Bagdon, whose father died in 1990, said he sold the trophy to raise money to help senior citizens near his home in Hesperia, Calif.

“We’ve had it for a long time and looked at it many times since I was a kid till now,” Bagdon told the Free Press on Tuesday night in a telephone interview. “I’m going to miss it, no doubt, but it hasn’t hit me yet. We will bring out more and more of his stuff and display it, so there won’t be a shortage around here of my dad’s things.”Bagdon had hoped the trophy would fetch more than $10,000. While it did not reach that, it did sell for more than the 1997 Outland Trophy won by Nebraska's Aaron Taylor that went for $6,800 in a court-ordered auction as part of his 2009 bankruptcy case.“Not really tickled pink, but I’m not dissatisfied,” Bagdon said of the selling price. “I would have liked to have seen it go for more, but it will help out a few people.”

He has no plans to sell any more of his father’s sports memorabilia.“We still have plenty more plaques and trophies of my dad’s,” said Bagdon, who is planning to move to Idaho with his 81-year-old mother within three months.Ed Bagdon attended Dearborn Fordson and played for MSU in 1946-49. He played three seasons in the NFL for the Cardinals and Redskins. He lived in Hesperia for 15 years before his death at age 64.Bagdon is the only player from a Michigan college to win the Outland Trophy, which recognizes the nation's outstanding interior lineman.
