Brett Favre's retirement announcement--maybe the first ever delivered nationally by voice mail--caught his legions of fans off guard. After a stellar season in which the Packers were oh-so-close to the Super Bowl, most were sure he was coming back. Instead, the unpredictable Favre had escaped once again.

Helpless but needing an off-season Favre fix and maybe believing all things Favre were ready to climb in value, fans and some collectors went to eBay in droves, buying hundreds of items, some above recent market value.

Just a day after the same cards were selling for $150-155, one PSA 10 1991 Topps Stadium Club Favre rookie card sold for $250. Buyers weren't picky. A BGS 10 '91 Upper Deck card brought $400. A 1991 Wild Card 100 Stripe sold for $395. Two BGS 9.5 Favre TSC rookies brought $225 and $179.

One of the more rare football cards produced of the Packers' legend was the 1991 Stadium Club Super Bowl XXVI #94 Favre card. The seller may have listed it a couple of days too soon. One of just seven graded BGS 9, it sold Sunday for $839. A nice price, to be sure, but probably not quite what it would have realized Tuesday.

A framed, signed Favre jersey sold for $569. A jersey with numerous inscriptions brought $880.

The most popular Favre item on Tuesday appeared to be the full-sized autographed helmets. One, with the '3x Super Bowl MVP' sold for a Buy it Now price of $699. A slew of Pro Line Favre signed helmets brought $399 each.

Those chasing every Favre football card ever issued will be in for an arduous search thanks to his lengthy career taking place during the explosion of football card issues of the 1990s and early 2000s. Beckett.com lists over 9,000 different Favre football cards in the master checklist.
