Buried Ortiz Jersey Garnering eBay Looks

Content originally published by sportscollectorsdaily.com on 21 April 2008

A game worn Ted Williams jersey might not fetch what a jackhammered David Ortiz could go for when bidding stops this week.

The shirt buried by a Bosox fan/construction worker inside the new Yankee Stadium recently was freed from its concrete tomb by the Yanks at a hefty cost. Management offered a verbal tongue lashing but put the publicity to good use, turning the jersey over to the Jimmy Fund and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for a special auction.

It's now on eBay with bidding having already surpassed the $69,000 mark thanks in part to some late additions to the package:

  • The winner will attend a 2008 Red Sox home game with a guest and be presented with the jersey at that time (date TBD).
  • A New, authentic David Ortiz road jersey. "Boston" embroidered on front, "34" and "Ortiz" on the back.
  • New York Yankees Universe size XL t-shirt in navy with white text on front

Yankees brass actually discussed filing criminal charges against construction worker Gino Castignoli, Cardinal Sean P. O'Malley of the Boston Archdiocese wasn't taking it quite as seriously.

Before heading to New York with 3,000 other Bostonians for Sunday's papal mass at Yankee Stadium, the Cardinal said "I'll be wearing my red socks, and if I get a chance I'll bury them in the outfield."
