Black Sox Papers Add Intrigue to Auction

A box of documents dating to the era of the Black Sox scandal surfaced in Chicago, possibly including new information that may shed light on the circumstances surrounding baseball's darkest hour.

Two Chicago collectors acquired legal papers, signed checks and other documents numbering in the thousands relating to the infamous 1919 World Series.

The box includes papers from the 1921 criminal trial against the White Sox players accused of throwing the World Series and from a 1924 suit in which some of those players sued the team for back pay. Two signed checks from the 1919 season, one signed by Eddie Cicotte and the other by Lefty Williams are included but the information and testimony included may be of interest beyond the collecting world. The Baseball Hall of Fame has already asked for copies of the papers.

Mastro Auctions has them for sale as one lot in its newest auction catalog.
Where the documents were discovered, who found them and exactly what information they contain is a little bit of a mystery.
