Baugh, Namath Top Super Bowl Auction

Live bidders doubled the price of a 1940s Sammy Baugh game-worn jersey at the Super Bowl XLIV Live Auction in Miami.



The well-worn #33 jersey once donned by the Pro Football Hall of Famer was bid up to nearly $20,000 online, but once the internet portion closed, weekend attendees at the Hard Rock Cafe pushed the final bid to $40,000. With Hunt Auctions' 15% buyer's premium added, the final realized price was $46,000.



The pre-sale estimate was $20-30,000.



Collectors also focused on a game-worn Joe Namath jersey dating to his post-Super Bowl days with the New York Jets. The green #12 shirt sold for $27,600 including the "juice". 



Some vintage game-used items from Norm Van Brocklin, sourced directly from the family, also drew bidders. His 1949 College All-Stars uniform and helmet sold as a package lot for $10,350, while a a helmet from his NFL career with the Los Angeles Rams brought $24,150 against a $10-20,000 estimate.



NFL Auctions, which partnered with Hunt for the sale, contributed several lots with a portion of the proceeds going to charity. A jersey worn by Brett Favre during his one season with the New York Jets sold for $11,500 while a Mark Sanchez Jets jersey donned this past season brought $7475. 



A game-worn 1997 Dan Marino Dolphins' jersey went for $6325, the same figure attained by an Eli Manning helmet from the 2008 season, signed by the Giants' Super Bowl winning quarterback. 



Another helmet, this one autographed by 23 quarterbacks who won Lombardi trophies, went for $4370.
