Saints Fans, NFL Make Waves With Trademark Dispute

January 30, 2010 on 1:56 pm | In Memorabilia, Football |

The NFL’s come under fire in recent years for their trademark and copyrights. While use of terms such as Super Bowl and even Big Game have mainly been flagged for their use in radio and newspaper promos, a possible case of trademark infringement has surfaced in New Orleans amongst a few creative Saints fans. Two brothers distributing shirts that bared the Saints’ “Who Dat?” motto were issued a cease and desist earlier this week by the NFL, citing they were creating and distributing trademarked NFL apparel for profit. Along with the creators of the shirt, word has it that many sports memorabilia shops in the New Orleans area were given notices to stop selling the shirts by the NFL. The league has stated that fans who buy the Saints merchandise do so under the false assumption that the shirts are licensed by the team.

Whatever the result, most fans and sports fans in New Orleans will be counting down the seconds to Super Bowl XLIV which kicks off Sunday February 7th at 6:25 p.m. EST.
