Ted Williams Memorabilia Buying Guide

By Sean J. O'RourkeTed Williams Memorabilia Buying Guide

Ted Williams was not just a great hitter—he might of been the best of all time. As precise as a surgeon yet as bruising as a heavyweight boxer, Ted Williams took the craft of hitting and made it into an art form. "No one could throw a fastball past me, God could come down from Heaven and he couldn't throw it past me," Williams once claimed. Twice named the American League's Most Valuable Player, Williams led the AL in batting six times while establishing a career batting average of .344, the highest for any player with 500+ home runs.

Williams joined the Boston Red Sox in 1939. In his rookie season, Williams would lead the league in runs batted in while finishing fourth in MVP voting. In 1941, the Red Sox slugger batted .406, a record that has stood for over 65 years. That same season, Williams and New York Yankee center fielder Joe DiMaggio fought for the hearts of baseball fans everywhere as DiMaggio matched Williams' .406 season with his record 56-game hitting streak. Williams reached an equally impressive yet less-heralded Major League mark when he reached base in a record 84 consecutive games in 1949. To this day, Ted Williams' career .482 on-base percentage is the highest in the history of Major League Baseball.

Despite not winning a World Series, Williams left a legacy of hard work and dedication on the game when he retired as baseball’s best statistical hitter. In addition to his two American League MVP seasons, Williams was named the Major League Player of the Year five times between 1941 and 1957 while capturing six American League Batting Titles. Williams would also twice win baseball's offensive Triple Crown as he led the Majors in home runs, runs batted in and batting average in 1942 and 1947. A 17-time All-Star, Ted Williams hit a home run in his final Major League at-bat before a sold-out crowd in Fenway Park. The Red Sox great was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966.
