Tony Stewart Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean J. O'Rourke
One of the greatest talents to ever sit in a racecar, Indiana's Tony Stewart is one of NASCAR's all-time greatest drivers. Growing up racing in USAC open wheel competition, Stewart quickly established himself as a star by winning the USAC Rookie of the Year in 1991. In 1995, Stewart won championships in all three of the USAC racing divisions before making his NASCAR Busch Series debut the following year. Competing mostly in the Indy Racing League, Stewart came close to winning the 1997 Indianapolis 500 before settling for fifth. Getting his first career IRL victory later that season at Pikes Peak, Stewart would close out the season with his first career Indy Racing League Championship. Despite his success running open wheel, Stewart found greatness at the helm of Joe Gibbs Motorsports' No. 20 in the NASCAR Cup Series. The eventual Winston Cup Rookie of the Year, Stewart set a Cup Series record by winning three races in his rookie campaign before finishing fourth in points. Becoming the sport's bad boy over the following seasons, Stewart had no problem ruffling the feathers of his competitors, mainly superstar Jeff Gordon. Gordon and Stewart to this day maintain a rivalry that started all the way back in 2000 when the two wrecked each other at a race in Watkins Glen, NY. Stewart's 2002 Daytona 500 lasted only two laps before the motor on his Home Depot Pontiac let go. Not to be discouraged, Stewart would win three races that season on his way to his first NASCAR Winston Cup Championship. Years of consistency paled in comparison to Smoke's 2005 season that saw him win the Allstate 400 at the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway and join Jeff Gordon as the only active driver with multiple Cup championships. In what was one of the most memorable racing moments in recent history, Stewart ascended Indy's frontstretch fence as a salute to the fans a la Indy Car star Helio Castroneves. After proclaiming he was "too fat" to be climbing fences, Tony's sponsor, the Home Depot, held sales for both ladders and bricks (Indianapolis Motor Speedway was originally paved with bricks). By winning the season-ending Nextel Cup, Stewart became one of the youngest drivers to ever win racing's most-prestigious championship twice.
Referred to by NASCAR veteran Mark Martin as the greatest driver of his generation, Tony Stewart is one of racing's all-time greatest talents. Stewart’s vibrant personality
is overshadowed only by his insatiable lust for victory, for which there has been no shortage of since his emergence as one of NASCAR's premier drivers during the past decade.
