Steve Nash Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean J. O'Rourke
ESPN recently named Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash as the ninth-greatest point guard in the history of the NBA. The two-time NBA Most Valuable Player has been instrumental in turning the Phoenix Suns into a perennial powerhouse in the NBA's Western Conference along with making the Suns the "Greatest Show on Hardwood.” Nash, who was drafted by the Suns 15th overall in 1996, originally struggled with the team and was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in 1998. Alongside fellow superstar Dirk Nowitzki, Nash helped lead Dallas to the Western Conference Finals the next season. Nash became a free agent that off-season and opted to re-sign with the Suns. Teaming with young stars Shawn Marion and Amare Stoudamire, Nash lead the Suns to the highest scoring season in over 10 years as the team averaged 110.4 points per game. In the 2004-5 season Nash won his first MVP Award, becoming the first Canadian to win the award and joining Bob Cousy and Magic Johnson as the only point guards ever to be named MVP. Nash won his second MVP award the following season as he lead the Suns into the Western Conference Finals, only to lose to the Dallas Mavericks. The six-time All-Star is arguably the best point guard of his generation, with his biggest competition coming from the Mavs' current point guard Jason Kidd. Nash however has helped make the Suns one of the most prolific offensive teams in the history of basketball. Nash himself ranks high on both the NBA's all-time free throw percentage list as well as the three-point percentage list and in a recent poll of NBA general managers, received 85% of the vote when asked to name the best point guard in the NBA.
When Steve Nash won his second consecutive NBA Most Valuable Player award, he joined the short list of only Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan of guards who've won the MVP award two years in a row. Nash, a guard whose astronomical athleticism hastened the pace of an entire league, is a shoo-in first ballot Hall of Famer.
