Magic Johnson Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean O'Rourke
Earvin "Magic" Johnson is one of the greatest players in the history of basketball. Voted NBA Most Valuable Player three times, "Magic" revolutionized the game of basketball with his size, strength, quickness and decision-making. The 6'9” Los Angeles Lakers point guard went on to win five NBA Championships, and was named NBA Finals MVP three times. Johnson was selected first overall in the 1979 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. During his sophomore year at Michigan State, Johnson led his Spartans to the NCAA Championship game to play their rival, the Indiana State Sycamores (led by Larry Bird) in possibly the most-hyped college basketball game ever played. Johnson's Spartans defeated Bird's Sycamores 75-64 and Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. Teamed with his personal idol Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson would lead the Lakers to five NBA Championships during the 1980s. Magic Johnson quickened the pace of the entire sport during his tenure as Lakers point guard with flashy no-look passes and a never before seen vivid, up-tempo style of play, which became known was “Showtime.” Johnson was named one of the NBA's 50 Greatest Players during the NBA's 50th Anniversary Season in 1997 and is without a doubt one of the most recognizable and influential sports figures in history.
Johnson's love of basketball on the court and his truly “Magic” personality off the court left a mark on everyone around him. In addition to his records, Johnson is also well-known for being the first openly HIV-positive player in the NBA. Rarely does a player push and exceed the original boundaries of his or her sport in the way Johnson did during both his collegiate career and his Hall of Fame NBA career.
