Larry Bird Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean J. O'Rourke
In the foreword of Larry Bird's autobiography, rival and friend Magic Johnson wrote, "Of all the people I play against, the only one I truly fear is Larry Bird." Johnson served as a driving force through Bird's Hall of Fame NBA career. Known as one of the game's all-time greatest players, Bird led the Boston Celtics to three NBA Championships during the 1980s. Bird's most famous, intense rivalry emerged with close friend Magic Johnson in the 1979 NCAA Championship Game. Johnson led his Michigan State Spartans past Bird's Indiana State Sycamores. The two would meet three times in the NBA Finals during the 1980s, a match up that is known very simply as "the Rivalry.” The matching of Bird and Johnson took the NBA from the sports' basement to worldwide notoriety; today they remain great friends and both members of the Naismith Pro Basketball Hall of Fame. During his career Bird was known as one of the toughest, most clutch and most versatile players in basketball, being named the NBA's Most Valuable Player three times. His selflessness, competitiveness and ability to hit big shots with the game on the line spotlight Bird's illustrious career, which in 1998 added a Hall of Fame induction to the resume.
