Derek Jeter Memorabilia Buying Guide

Derek Jeter MemorabiliaBy Sean J. O'Rourke

In sports there are few players who are more accomplished and more celebrated than New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter. Jeter took over as starting shortstop for the Bronx Bombers in 1996 and would go on to win the American League Rookie of the Year while the New York Yankees won their 23rd World Series Championship. During his tenure as the starting shortstop for New York, Jeter has led the Yankees to four World Series Champions in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Widely considered one of the game's best defenders, Jeter won three consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards spanning from 2004 through 2006. Noted for his ability to come up big in the clutch, in his postseason career Jeter is a .314 hitter to go along with 17 home runs and 48 runs batted in. He has failed to reach base in only 14 of his 119 career postseason games as a starter. Coinciding with offensive greatness, Jeter is responsible for some of the most memorable defensive plays in baseball history. In a tied Game 3 of the 2001 American League Division Series against the Oakland Athletics, Oakland right fielder Terrence Long hit a double down the right field line. When New York outfielder Shane Spencer's relay throw to Tino Martinez sailed over Martinez's head, Jeter came from literally out of nowhere to pick up the ball and flip it to catcher Jorge Posada who then tagged out Jason Giambi, who would have been the go-ahead run. This play became known simply as "the Flip." The Yankees went on to win the game and the series. During a July 1, 2004 meeting against the archrival Boston Red Sox, the game was tied at 3-3 in the top of the 12th inning. Trot Nixon stepped to bat with two men on base before hitting a lazy fly ball up the left field line that looked as if it would drop in fair territory and doom the Yanks. As the ball began dropping to Earth, Jeter raced up the line and caught the ball before his momentum carried him careening into the third row of seats at Yankee Stadium. The catch preserved the 3-3 tie and the Yankees would go on to win the game in the bottom of the 13th inning. Jeter emerged from the game with a lacerated chin and several bruises on his face, a moment fitting to be a shining microcosm of the Yankee shortstop, only the eleventh Yankee Captain in franchise history.

Derek Jeter is a timeless player whose iconic stature and on the field accomplishments have made him one of the most respected and recognizable athletes in the world. Jeter has joined the ranks of such legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Thurman Munson and Don Mattingly as one of only eleven Yankee Captains. Jeter's four World Series Championships, three Rawlings Gold Gloves and larger than life status as one of baseball's all-time brightest stars make any investment in his authentic memorabilia a solid one. Jeter is not done adding hardware to his trophy room but when he is, it's a sure bet the Baseball Hall of Fame will be calling.
