Dale Earnhardt Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean J. O'Rourke
Amongst the most popular and influential figures in the history of sports, Dale Earnhardt is and will forever be the face of auto racing around the world. Earnhardt’s seven Winston Cup Championships are matched only by Richard Petty for the most in the history of NASCAR's top series. NASCAR's top rookie in 1975, Earnhardt would bulldoze his way through his competition for over 25 years. Nicknamed "the Intimidator," his famous black GM Goodwrench No. 3 Chevrolet in a rear-view mirror was often a competitor's worst nightmare given Earnhardt's unmatched tenacity and fearless driving style. Although amassing 75 career victories, none was more memorable than the 1998 Daytona 500, a race that alluded Earnhardt for 20 years. In what is considered to be one of the most exciting and memorable moments in sports history, Earnhardt took the checkers at the Great American Race before being congratulated by every single crew member on pit road on his way to victory lane. In possibly the only moment in racing history more memorable than Dale's victory at that race was fatal crash in the final turn of the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Racing in third place behind two of his own cars driven by his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. and teammate Michael Waltrip, Earnhardt's black Chevrolet made contact with another car before making a very severe head-on impact with the turn four outside retaining wall. As his own cars took the top two spots in the race, Earnhardt was lifted from his car before being airlifted to a hospital where he would succumb to his injuries later that afternoon. Despite the tragic way his life ended, many friends and family insist there is no way that Earnhardt would have rather met his fate than at the track he loved so dearly.
Remembered by many as the greatest driver to ever strap in a race car, Dale Earnhardt is truly an American icon who will never ever be forgotten.
