Curt Schilling Memorabilia Buying Guide
By Sean J. O'Rourke
One of the best postseason pitchers in the history of baseball, Curt Schilling has left his mark throughout his illustrious Major League career. Schilling started to make serious marks on the diamond with the Philadelphia Phillies during the 1993 National League Championship Series. His Phillies facing the heavily-favored Braves, Schilling made two starts in the series recording a 1.69 ERA and 19 strikeouts. Despite not posting a win, Schilling's performance was enough to earn him the NLCS Most Valuable Player award as the Phils moved past Atlanta. Pitching a five-hit complete game shutout in Game Five, Schilling began earning his reputation as a player known to perform his best in the clutch. The Phils would eventually fall to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game Six but in the following seasons, Schilling emerged as one of the greatest pitchers in all of baseball. Leading the National League in strikeouts in both 1997 and 1998, Schilling requested and was granted a trade to the Arizona Diamondbacks midway through the 2000 regular season. He posted some of his most notable career achievements during his stay in Arizona, most notably in 2001 as he led the Diamondbacks to their first-ever World Series. Going 4-0 with a 1.12 ERA in the playoffs, Schilling and teammate Randy Johnson were named co-MVPs of the Series.
His dominance continued after he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in November 2003, and Schilling's most memorable moment would prove to be one of the most unforgettable in sports history. In the middle of the historic 2004 ALCS comeback against the rival New York Yankees, Curt Schilling took the mound in Game Six for the Red Sox with a severely injured ankle. With blood soaking through three sutures and through his sock, Schilling struck out four batters while allowing only one run over seven innings en route to an unforgettable Red Sox victory. After the Sox defeated the Yanks in historic comeback fashion, they steamrolled the St. Louis Cardinals on their way to the franchise's first World Series title in 86 years. After the season, Schilling's bloody sock was placed in the Baseball Hall of Fame where it remains to this day. Collecting multiple baseball milestones in the years to follow, Schilling earned both his 200th career victory and 3,000th career strikeout in 2006. Continuing his masterful postseason play, Schilling would be an integral part of the Red Sox 2007 World Series campaign as he became only the second pitcher over the age of 40 to start and win a World Series game.
One of the game's all-time greatest big-game pitchers, Curt Schilling is one of baseball's most accomplished players. Never shying away from controversy, Schilling has had several public conflicts with management, the media and other players yet always backing up his words with performance on the diamond. Curt Schilling has been involved in some of the most memorable games our generation has ever witnessed. No baseball collection is complete without the all-time great. If you're looking to make a solid addition to your sports- influenced room at home, look no further.
