Kareem Abdul Jabbar Memorabilia Buying Guide

By Sean J. O'Rourke

Known for his precision and unparalleled athleticism, Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul Jabbar (born Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor) dominated the hardwood from the time he led his high-school team to an amazing 72 straight wins over three years to the time he retired from the NBA a six-time world champion in 1989. Playing his college ball at UCLA, Jabbar won two NCAA Player of the Year awards while leading the Bruins to an unbelievable 88-2 record during his three year career. Named by ESPN as the greatest college basketball player of all-time, Jabbar was drafted first overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1969 NBA Draft.  Jabbar set the NBA on fire his first season, winning Rookie of the Year honors while becoming the second leading scorer in the NBA. Milwaukee's addition of future Hall of Famer Oscar Roberston earned the Bucks the NBA Championship, while Jabbar was named the NBA's Most Valuable Player as he led the league in scoring at 31.7 points per game.

By 1973, Jabbar had wrapped up his third MVP award in five seasons while remaining at or near the top of the NBA's scorers, rebounders and defenders. Despite his successes in Milwaukee, Jabbar yearned for a larger spotlight and requested a trade to either Los Angeles or New York. Traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 1975, Jabbar would go to on to win the league MVP award in both 1976 and 1977. Despite his personal success, Jabbar longed most for championships, a feat left unaccomplished since his trade from Milwaukee. His desire would be matched with the prowess of a young and talented point guard by the name of Earvin "Magic" Johnson. The first overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft, Johnson and Jabbar made one of the most lethal combinations the NBA had ever seen. The definitive team of the decade, Jabbar and the Lakers represented the Western Conference in the NBA Finals an unbelievable eight times during the 1980s. The decade also saw Jabbar win his record sixth NBA MVP award while surpassing Wilt Chamberlain's all-time mark for career points in NBA history.

Winning the NBA Championship in two of his final three seasons, Kareem Abdul Jabbar is among the greatest athletes to ever step foot on the hardwood. Absolutely no sports collection worth its weight in salt is complete without authentic memorabilia commemorating the NBA's all-time career scoring champion.
