Micheal Jordan Memorabilia Buying GuideBy Sean J. O'Rourke Michael Jordan is the ultimate sports figure, a man who so embodied yet transcended his craft. Jordan is the without a doubt, consensus choice for the greatest basketball player who has ever lived. “MJ” played three years at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill under legendary coach Dean Smith. Jordan helped the Tarheels to win the 1982 National Championship and was named the NCAA Player of the Year in both 1983 and 1984. He was drafted third overall by the Chicago Bulls in 1984 and within weeks was becoming among the NBA's brightest stars. In his rookie season campaign Jordan was often cheered at opposing arenas for his show stopping moves and never before seen agility. The fans voted Jordan to start in the All-Star Game that season, much to the annoyance of veterans who were jealous of Jordan’s quick success. He went on to win the 1985 Rookie of the Year Award. It didn't take long for Jordan to start recording record performances on the hardwood. During his second season, Jordan racked up a still-standing NBA record for most points in a playoff game as he scored 63 points on the Boston Celtics, a team considered amongst the greatest teams of all-time. Jordan would go on to win his first of five NBA MVP awards in 1988. His second MVP award came in 1991 with his first NBA Championship as the Bulls. The team defeated their rival the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals and beat the Los Angeles Lakers four games to one. Jordan was voted the unanimous NBA Finals MVP. Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were only entering the first step towards a decade of pure domination of the NBA. Jordan and the Bulls would go on to win the next two NBA titles in 1992 and 1993, and Jordan became the first player in NBA history to win three consecutive NBA Finals MVP awards. Following the murder of his father James R. Jordan Sr., Michael Jordan retired from the NBA in 1993. After a short and unsuccessful stint playing baseball, Michael Jordan returned to the court on March 19, 1995. He led the Bulls to the playoffs, but was defeated by the Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference semi-finals. With Jordan recommitted strictly to basketball, the Chicago Bulls recovered their second three-peat championship run of the decade. With one of the most-replayed shots ever taken, in Game Six of the 1998 NBA Finals, Jordan cross-over Utah defender Bryon Russell and hit the series-winning shot with under 10 seconds remaining. Jordan collected his sixth NBA Finals MVP award to coincide with his sixth NBA Championship.
Michael Jordan's career success is unmatched by any athlete in any sport around the world. To this day, Jordan remains the image and face of basketball around the world. Jordan was truly the Greatest of Greats, a man who with every game pushed the creativity of his sport further and further until the day he stepped off the court for the final time. Simply put, there are no more desired items in all of sports than those of Michael Jordan. If you're looking to master your basketball memorabilia collection, I cannot emphasize enough the value of a Michael Jordan autographed item.
